Recently Currituck County announced a new dune protection plan which can be viewed on the website (dune vegetation program:  : Dune Vegetation Reimbursement Program Administrative Process - Beach Grass - Currituck County and sand fence program: Sand Fence Reimbursement Program Administrative Process - Currituck County.) The county recognizes the value of the dunes in our communities and is making what WPOA believes is a very good effort to keep them protected.

In the past the county offered to subsidize the purchase of sand fence (not 100%) with installation by the owner. This new program goes much further. In a nutshell the county will reimburse the supply and installation of vegetation and sand fencing at 100% of cost with a limit of $900 per property.

The county manager has assured us that Currituck County has budgeted the money needed to complete this substantial work.

When you go to the site, you will see that the program is offered to HOAs, POAs and the general public who are not part of an organization. As much as WPOA would like to take the lead on a Whalehead effort, we cannot do so as a voluntary organization where we have financial and legal constraints. We encourage all beach front owners to take advantage of this program directly.

For the selection of a contractor many of you have landscape companies who most likely can do this work or you can reach out to other companies. The following companies are interested in the work and have reviewed the county requirements. Owner Payment & Reimbursement

Owners will need to pay their contractor directly. Once the work is completed the county will inspect the work and then authorize payment. The county turnaround time after inspection for reimbursement should be reasonably quick. Owners may consider negotiating the contractor payment with this consideration.

This offer is only good until April 15^th.  The county doesn’t explain why there is a time limit but the bottom line is  BEACH FRONT OWNERS CAN GET UP TO $900 to repair/maintain Whalehead’s dunes.
